I Intelligent (vs. Smart) Cities;

The Role of Designers and Design Education in Future Planning and Policy

The first Smart Cities Week conference was held in Washington DC in September, 2016. This gathering promotes the idea that tech's newest startups should be concerned with the design and plan of smart (connected) cities. The Chairman of the Smart Cities Council, Jesse Berst, summed up the movement as something "… far more than a trend. It's a race. A race to attract jobs and talent by providing a stateof-the-art digital infrastructure…. A race to reduce income disparity by providing "ladders of opportunity" to those less fortunate." 1. While the movement has succeeded in building state of the art infrastructures and attracting high-paying jobs and talent, it has done quite poorly in providing "ladders of opportunity" for existing residents of these cities. A leader in the smart city revolution, San Francisco, is a case in point: "…for all the optimism, innovation and wealth that are produced here, the Bay Area can also feel like a place that doesn't work quite right." 2. Tech is an essential component for any urban policy and plan moving forward, but we cannot ignore a city's greatest natural resource: its people. This talk will showcase two successful planning projects that transformed lives in some of the poorest neighborhoods in Cleveland, Ohio. This American rust-belt city has been devastated by both industry and whole populations moving from it, leaving behind poverty, low education levels and lack of access to technology. But, by working with the community, designers were able to transform a district without forcing people out of their houses. In another project, designers were able to work with community members, politicians and the federal government to enforce a Consent Decree that transformed police training and community oversight of the police in the city. Both successful projects were accomplished with design educators and students adding their expertise and access to infrastructure and materials. By bringing together the expertise of both designers and residents, we can propose and build intelligent places to live – places where housing is affordable, education is accessible, healthy food is in reach and all people, not just a few, lead rich lives.

The Practice of CGI Integration in AES+F Projects

AES+F began its practice at the end of the 80s, using traditional media like painting, drawing, paper collages, embroidery, analog photography, and readymades. We have always been interested in trying and mastering new media, instruments, and techniques in our work. We think that new technologies should first become a little dated, before artists can really use them as an extension of their hand. This talk will shed some light on our experience using digital technologies in our work.

In the middle of the 90s, we began using Photoshop for the first time in order to make digital collages, and later tried to use CGI in the project Berlin Wall 2 (1995). We used an “Indigo” computer to create a model of a transparent wall and a few other elements, to combine them later with real landscape photographs.

Then, in 2003-2005, for the project Action Half-Life, we used CGI elements – futuristic weapons, UFOs, and structures in combination with analog photography of landscapes and models. We liked the result, and in the next project, Last Riot, we already started working with digital photography of models-actors in combination with backgrounds and objects in CGI. Then we tried for the first time to animate all the elements. After that, we have been using digital tools in practically all of our work, from modeling monumental and room-sized sculptures and producing them using a 5-axis drill, to making video set decoration for theatre entirely using CGI. We will also discuss our current work producing a series of porcelain sculptures, which were modeled entirely in CGI and then 3D printed to create form negatives for porcelain, as well as our current big project working on a set design for Giacomo Puccini’s “Turandot” opera in Europe.
